What is the difference between rum, brandy, vodka, and whiskey?

These spirits are varying according to the substrate used to produce alcohol as;

Rum: sugarcane juice or its by-products
Brandy: fruits, particularly grapes (or distilling wine)
Whiskey: Grain mash (e.g. corn, rye, barley, wheat, etc.)
Vodka: grains, potatoes and sometimes sugar or fruit
